Never Too Late

A Green Prods. production with the support of the Israel Film Fund. Produced by Ido Fluk, Gal Greenspan, Roi Kurland. Directed, written by Ido Fluk. With: Nony Geffen, Ami Weinberg, Pira Kantor, Keren Berger, Eyal Rozales, Shifra Milstein. The first Israeli feature produced with crowd-sourced funding, minimalist indie "Never Too Late" is a good-looking, formally rigorous road movie that becomes increasingly involving as it motors along. As the protagonist drives his late father's battered Volvo through varied landscapes rarely seen in Israeli cinema, he must come to terms with considerable emotional baggage as well as the contents of his father's old suitcase, still in the car's trunk. Cerebral, controlled pic marks helmer-writer Ido Fluk as a talent to watch and reps quality content for fests that nurture challenging fare. After his army service, 30-year-old Herzl (Nony Geffen) spent eight years traveling throughout South America, avoiding the expectations of his stern father (Ami Weinberg). His refusal to return home for his father's funeral now haunts him, but it's never too late to make amends, or is it? Ever restless and lacking ambitions or prospects, Herzl accepts solitary work hanging advertising posters for a dating service with the slogan "Never Too Late" in cities throughout the country. As he goes about his daily routine, his memories of his father become so intense that they take on physical shape, which Fluk visualizes by having the older man ride and converse with his son. On his travels, which take him to north to Safed and south to Eilat, Herzl also makes contact with an old army buddy, now a married father; a sexy former girlfriend (Keren Berger); and a philosophical stranger (Eyal Rozales), whom he saves from drowning. But the contents of the suitcase dictate the last and most poignant stop. Fluk doles out narrative information sparingly, and sometimes not at all. Although some viewers may feel frustrated, those attentive to the pic's mood and detail will find it truly moving. Sharply produced on a micro-budget, the pic sports a mesmerizing score and attractive widescreen lensing from the same digital camera that Danny Boyle used to shoot "Slumdog Millionaire" (a loan from an Israeli-American businessman who read about the production's fund drive and wanted to help). Fluk, who studied at NYU, already has a second feature lined up with Christine Vachon's Killer Films that is in the casting stage.Camera (color, widescreen, DV), Itay Marom; editor, Assaf Lapid; music, Asher Goldschmidt; production designer, Yiftach Shapira; sound, Gadi Raz. Interview using the Vampire Author Anne Grain Sounds Off on Twilight's Sparkly Vampires of the underworld

Twilight, True Bloodstream Team Edward isn't pleased with vampire full Anne Grain. The Job Interview using the Vampire author triggered a furor on Facebook after leaving comments the undead in her own books would "have a pity party for vampires of the underworld that sparkle under the sun.Inch Browse the relaxation of present day news "I had been just joking," Grain informs The Daily Animal. "People request me things i consider that, and that i finally pretended that Lestat and Louis were real and gave their opinion on which they considered the vampires of the underworld in Twilight. Regrettably, I believe a number of Stephenie Meyer visitors required it the wrong manner, found my Facebook page, and were quite uncomfortable. However I think they are very... youthful. It had been a significant ruckus! "I can tell why the children like them," Grain states from the Twilight books and flicks. "What I only say immediately is that they go ahead and take formula of women's romance which was utilized by Jane Eyre, plus they place it inside a new context. You will find the youthful girl, Bella she falls deeply in love with this mysterious figure, and he's menacing much like Mr. Rochester is at Jane Eyre, but he's protective. I believe this is an long lasting formula." On her formula in creating vampires of the underworld, though, Grain wanted a far more "realistic" take. "I went together with things i inherited from Hollywood-that vampires of the underworld melt away under the sun.... I figured when they responded hysterically to garlic clove or crucifixes, which was less interesting his or her being nihilistic and atheistic, and never getting a 'magical' reaction to something but getting definite restrictions and rules." Take a look at photos of True Bloodstream The brand new genre of vampires of the underworld, Grain notes, tend to be not the same as her Interview using the Vampire protagonists. "Things I see happening, with authors like [True Blood's] Charlaine Harris and Stephenie Meyer, may be the domestication from the vampire. I had been interested in a effective, " Old World " figure which had lots of understanding, experience, and was encircled by lots of glamour and mystery... Charlaine Harris does different things by imagining how it is like if vampires of the underworld are legal and you've got them residing in your Southern town, and i believe she will get a significant quantity of energy from that. She's very witty-there's lots of satire there-as well as on the Cinemax showTrue Bloodstream, you will find a romance with Vampire Bill." Using the supernatural increasing, Grain will tackle werewolves though her new novel, The Wolf Grit, with a much different undertake werewolf mythology from twilighting. "I favor to choose the thought of the guy-wolf that continued to be a guy, but grew to become very effective and powerful,Inch she states. "He does not are a four-footed animal that lives inside a pack." Grain is not in opposition to True Blood's werewolf Alcide (Joe Manganiello), though that might be because "the character's hot," she states. Which vampires of the underworld would you prefer, those in Twilight, True Bloodstream or Interview using the Vampire?

Hollywood Managers Back New Appeal Challenging Talent Agencies Act (Exclusive)

TJ ScottRick Siegel's suit of former client Rosa Blasi (pictured) is headed back to the California Supreme Court. Should Hollywood talent managers remain in danger of losing their hard-earned commissions if they are found to have improperly "procured" employment for clients?our editor recommendsHow a Nasty Legal Fight Over 'Deep Throat,' 'Debbie Does Dallas' Was SettledJudge to Set Trial Date in Golden Globes Legal Fight That issue, long one of the most sensitive in the entertainment representation community, is coming to the foreground again in the form of a new appeal by legal crusader Rick Siegel that is finding broad if not overwhelming support within the talent management community. Siegel, as you might recall, is the manager (now former manager--he left the business) whose case against actress Rosa Blasi (Lifetime's Strong Medicine) challenged the Talent Agencies Act, the California law that says only licensed talent agents can "procure" work in the entertainment business. Other representatives, including managers, may only advise clients on their general careers, and if they are caught procuring jobs, their contracts with clients can be voided and commissions disgourged. It's a fairly draconican law, especially since Hollywood has evolved into a business where the expected duties of managers and agents often overlap. Both regularly provide specific career advice and, yes, some help their clients get specific jobs. The TAA is thus sometimes used by talent who simply wish to escape paying commissions to a manager that is no longer wanted. We've seen cases where an actor fires his manager, the manager sues to obtain commissions, and the actor claims a violation of the TAA to void the management contract. Still, the law is clear and is widely known in Hollywood representation circles. In 2008, Siegel's case against Blasi went up to the California Supreme Court, where the court refused to throw out the law or its tough remedies for infractions. He then sued his lawyers at LA's Fox & Spillane firm for malpractice for failing, in his view, to argue some key points during the appeal. Having lost an arbitration against the lawyers, he's now appealing to the state's high court a refusal by the lower court to vacatate the arbitration--and, in the process, he's raising the TAA issues anew. What's interesting now is how a number of prominent management companies have joined the fight, submitting letters to the court or otherwise backing the appeal. The biggest managers in Hollywood -- companies like Anonymous Content, Brillstein, Mosaic and Management 360 -- seem to be absent from the list, but there are a few companies included with considerable clout, such as Luber Roklin, Generate and Thruline, as well as the Talent Managers Association and the National Conference of Personal Managers. (A full list below). "California's Labor Commissioner and courts have erroneously applied the TAA to personal managers in an unfair and disproportionate fashion," says Clinton Ford Billups Jr., president of NCOPM, a trade association of personal managers. "It has resulted in forfeitures of fairly earned contractual fees legitimately earned in commercial commerce." Siegel wants the court to review whether a 1982 revision of the law should be interpreted to take out the tough disgourgement penalties for violations. And he's raising many of the same issues he did before, challenging whether the TAA even applies to managers. Siegel is representing himself. Justice

January Jones and Nicolas Cage in 'Justice.' A Momentum Pictures (in U.K.) release of an Endgame Entertainment Co. presentation in association with Aura Film Partnership and Fierce Entertainment of an Endgame Entertainment, Material Pictures and Ram Bergman production. (International sales: FilmNation, Los Angeles.) Produced by James D. Stern, Ram Bergman, Tobey Maguire. Executive producers, Douglas E. Hansen, Jenno Topping, Julie Goldstein, Christopher Petzel. Co-producers, Dave Pomier, Lucas Smith. Directed by Roger Donaldson. Screenplay, Robert Tannen, Yuri Zeltser, from a story by Tannen, Todd Hickey. Will Gerard - Nicolas Cage Laura Gerard - January Jones Simon - Guy Pearce Jimmy - Harold Perrineau Trudy - Jennifer Carpenter Lt. Durgan - Xander Berkeley Alan Marsh - Jason Davis Scar - IronE Singleton Cancer - Wayne Pere Det. Green - Marcus Lyle Brown Sideburns - Dikran Tulaine Det. Rudeski - Joe ChrestNearly two years after cameras rolled in New Orleans on "The Hungry Rabbit Jumps," the Nicolas Cage-starring vigilante thriller, now retitled "Justice," has started to hit theaters in Europe and Hong Kong. It has not been worth the wait: This unconvincing, workmanlike genre piece reps a considerable dip in quality for director Roger Donaldson after his 2008 heist pic "The Bank Job." With no release date yet for the U.S., where its title is "Seeking Justice," ancillary reps the pic's best chance for modest recoupment. Positioned in Blighty as counterprogramming to "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," the pic earned just 183,000 ($293,000) from 244 cinemas in its first two days, indicating a swift exit from theaters. In the recent "The Next Three Days," audiences rooted for Russell Crowe's English teacher to acquire an unlikely skill set and bust his wife out of prison. "Justice" attempts a similar trick, casting Cage as nice-guy English teacher Will Gerard, comfortably decked out in corduroy trousers and spectacles. When his musician wife, Laura (January Jones), is brutally raped, Will feels his own powerlessness. Enter shaven-headed, sharp-suited Simon (Guy Pearce), who offers street justice for the crime in exchange for a future favor of vaguely modest proportions. The rapist is then summarily executed. Simon is as good as his word when he later asks Will to perform some routine surveillance on a man he claims is a pedophile. But the stakes rise when he demands that Will murder the suspect in question. In a contrived passage, Will finds himself implicated in the death of a local newspaper reporter, held for police interrogation and then freed by a rogue cop when he reveals his knowledge of the vigilante network's code phrase, "The hungry rabbit jumps." Of course, it turns out he was better off in custody. Despite a two-part climax, starting with a monster truck rally at the New Orleans Superdome, then relocating to the abandoned New Orleans Center shopping mall, "Justice" lacks the consistent thrills that might encourage the audience to indulge its numerous implausibilities. In another questionable choice of roles, Cage is unpersuasive as an inner-city schoolteacher, a part that gives him little leeway to explore the loopier shades that were showcased so entertainingly in "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" and "Kick-Ass." As Will's friend and colleague, gifted thesp Harold Perrineau isn't given much to work with, and Pearce (drafted close to the shoot start date) doesn't make sense of the shadowy Simon character, whose motivation remains obscure, partly because the p.o.v. remains almost exclusively with the protag. One particularly troubling aspect of the film is its ambivalent perspective on vigilante action, disapproving more of its corrupt execution than its essence. Lenser David Tattersall uses compact digital cameras to capture a real flavor of post-Katrina New Orleans, but any such verisimilitude seems wasted on the screenplay credited to Robert Tannen and Yuri Zeltser (working from a story by Tannen and cinematographer Todd Hickey), though given the extended period of post-production, what resemblance the finished film bears to their original conception is anyone's guess. Inclusion of scenes at the city's newspaper, police department and an urban high school suggests an ambition to offer texture and flavor along the lines of "The Wire," clearly an optimistic goal.Camera (color, wide-screen, HD), David Tattersall; editor, Jay Cassidy; music, J. Regis Philbin Signs Off Live After 28 Years

Regis Philbin In the end, it wasn't just Regis and Kelly, or Regis and Kathie Lee ... it felt more like Regis and everybody. After some 16,000 hours in front of a television camera, Regis Philbin signed off Live! with Regis and Kelly Friday morning.Ending a 28-year run, the "Farewell Special" began oddly with a black-and-white camera following him on his final walk to the studio. It had a little of a Dead Man Walking feel to it. But once he got to the stage, he walked out to a star-studded audience of family and friends. Among them: Diane Sawyer, Donald Trump, Tony Danza and Kathie Lee Gifford (with whom he co-hosted Live! for 15 years), as well as Philbin's wife, Joy, and his daughters.Check photos of Regis Philbin through the yearsA hilarious montage focused on how many people have imitated him over the years, notably Dana Carvey, who captured Philbin's fulminating crescendo so well: "Anyway, are you ready for this? ... it's OUT. OF. CONTROL."Then NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg came out and proposed several possible new jobs for Philbin, including driving a cab, playing for the Yankees, strumming a guitar as the next Naked Cowboy in Times Square, or running to become the next mayor. After kibitzing, Bloomberg presented Philbin with the key to the city. The final program also featured reminiscences from his family, and a fun highlight of the marching band from his alma mater - Notre Dame - spelling out his name in tribute.A tearful Kelly Ripa, not wanting to forget anything, wrote down some of what she wanted to say, invoking the "43 steps" they always walked from her dressing room to the stage before each show. And in a riff on the most famous song from the Broadway musical Rent, the show's cast sang "955,600 Minutes" - the amount of time he's spent on television.Regis Philbin reflects on his career, fame and "the Tweeter"On the eve of his departure, the bon mots for his bon voyage also were uttered in prime time and late night with Regis Philbin: The Morning Maestro, a special edition of 20/20 anchored and reported by Katie Couric, and an appearance on Late Show With David Letterman.David Letterman, who dropped by his morning show earlier in the week, told Philbin - who first came to national prominence as Joey Bishop's sidekick in late 1960s on Bishop's late-night ABC talk show - that he ranked in a pantheon of broadcasters that may only include Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Oprah Winfrey. In his enduring career, the 80-year-old, Bronx-born broadcaster achieved prime-time success in 1999 when he began hosting the hit game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. And just earlier this year, he and Ripa won the Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Talk Show Host.Eight possible contenders to replace Regis Philbin on Live!Starting Monday, Ripa will have a parade of interim co-hosts (starting with Jerry Seinfeld). Philbin said earlier this week he'll probably be watching the first show without him in his hotel room in Miami, where he'll be on a book tour for his memoir How I Got This Way.Friday morning's show ended with Walt Disney Co. President Robert Iger thanking Philbin and unveiling a plaque dedicated to him at the entrance to ABC's NY headquarters - and Philbin's final words. And he was a pro to the very end. He kept it together - he didn't break down, talking about how the show was the "last chance I had in this business, to make it here in NY, and I came back a little bit late in my life to make it all work. I guess it was fate that it would happen this way, and it did."As for the show's long success, he said people tell him they watch it "because it makes them feel better. And it can't get better than that."He said he'll never be able to top that.

Corina stated the recent media attention within the situation has brought to "people coming forward and wanting to speak to us.""At this time her dying is definitely an accidental drowning," Corina stated. "Until we discover something which states it is not, it's still an accidental drowning." Contact Ted Manley at ted.manley@variety.com

Stakes filled with Viacom's appeal

The initial act in Viacom's suit against YouTube involved private emails, faulty recollections and several genuine corporate embarrassment. The second act purports to offer more legal weight than juicy particulars, with large legal guns to argue before a federal appellate court in NY on Tuesday. The problem could define the recommendations in the road for that internet because it concentrates on where YouTube's liability lies when clients publish infringing material, massive amounts of it, on its site. The "safe harbor" provision in the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, written a very long time before YouTube was produced, shields Websites companies, website operators while others from liability for breach by their clients after they meet certain conditions, like rapidly responding to takedown notices sent by content designers. In the new book that has been circulating among media insurance supporters, "Free Ride: How Digital Undesirable microorganisms Are Destroying the Culture Business, and the way the Culture Business Can Fight,Inch journalist Robert Levine produces, "The suit could go to the Top Court, which is outcome will define the way ahead for digital Millennium Copyright Act, and perhaps the net itself."Hyperbole? Certainly not if you look whatsoever in the amicus briefs filed by disparate groups with much at risk inside the situation, off their Internet firms like Yahoo and Facebook for the people in the Eagles. The response in studio and guild ranks to U.S. District Court Judge Louis Stanton's June 2010 summary judgment decision meant for YouTube was among dismay.Viacom, which filed its suit in 2007, had contended that YouTube not only was conscious of clients were uploading 100s of thousands of copyrighted clips towards the site but built its enterprize model around it. But Stanton ruled that YouTube's prompt removal of clips if the got a takedown notice was sufficient. "Mere understanding" of infringing activity online is "inadequate,Inch he ruled."General knowning that breach is ubiquitous does not impose a duty on the organization to look at or search its service for infringements," he written.Especially irritating to Viacom together with other media congloms: When Stanton shipped this victory to YouTube and corporate parent Google, he mentioned the current system of takedown notices "works effectively." They've contended that Stanton essentially overlooked this really is in the Supreme Court's 2005 Grokster decision, which held that there's liability for "inducing" breach on the internet.Inside an amicus brief, the MPAA as well as the Independent Film and tv Alliance reason why a provision in the DMCA that safe harbor requires action not just from "actual understanding" but "awareness" from this from "particulars and scenariosInch which will make such activity "apparent." Stanton "extended safe harbor protection needs to be law not long lasting the existence of factual queries about appellees' inducement of breach throughout YouTube's early years. Your final decision not only misconstrues the (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) but offers a guide for culpable service companies to create their companies good breach of others' copyrighted works." The argument from YouTube together with other Internet firms is that they could not possibly hold responsibility for your lot of fabric released for his or her sites. Otherwise, there'll not function as next YouTube or Facebook: It'd stifle innovation if sites need to spend each of their time controlling clients. "Litigants haven't recognized only one clip-in-suit that YouTube understood was infringing but not successful to rapidly take lower," YouTube written within the appellate brief. "Rather, litigants offer various ideas about why generalized awareness that unknown infringing material may be somewhere online needs to be disqualifying."YouTube is grew to become an associate of by many people people digital rights groups like Public Understanding, which echo arguments that even sites that make an effort to police content haven't any approach to knowing whether it's an approved or unauthorized use, raising First Amendment and fair use concerns. Inside their amici brief, Public Understanding tries to pour cold water around the technology that has satisfied art galleries, the obstructing of content to put copyrighted material. "Automated filters cannot dependably determine when and whether specific distribution are infringing," the org states. The irony is always that Viacom's suit, filed in 2007, is about what went down at YouTube formerly the business used the obstructing technology in 2008, so studio concerns have moved regarding the Stanton's decision method to other sites present and future. It could really actually cover much more in comparison to $1 billion Viacom initially looked for. There's little question within the stakes. Google states it spent $100 million just inside the first act Viacom has famous legal novelty helmet Ted Olson to argue its situation. Yet even such extensive assets don't mitigate the unpredictability, or perhaps the chance the appellate court will choose sides rather than render some mutual understanding. As Levine states, "The idea of YouTube being responsible for everything on its server is a disaster for that internet business, and the idea of them being responsible for nothing is a disaster for your entertainment business." UPDATE: Not really a chance!UPDATE: Variety's Justin Kroll just tweeted that news that Lively, like lots of before her, has happened on playing Elizabeth Bennet. The loooooong search for the undead-smashing literary heroine continues....It is a truth globally acknowledged the director in posession from the good script ought to be in want from the star. Consequently it is always that Twitch are verifying that Craig Gillespie has offered charge role of Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Gossip Girl's Blake Lively. If she signs on it will likely be a choice starring role for your actress, who we last saw as Carol Ferris in Eco-friendly Lantern (she can become Star Azure yet...) But it's also one that's been connected with and abandoned with a couple of her peers already. First inside the ring was Natalie Portman (who remains a producer), then Emma Stone and whispers of Scarlett Johansson and Mia Wasikowska. Did they do know something Lively does not?The presence of Lars as well as the Real Girl and Fright NIght's Gillespie within the helm (altering David O Russell) is reassuring, but it will likely be intriguing to determine which type of film they can spin within the one-joke source novel, put together by Seth Graeme-Cruz (who also composed the script).Be it passed you by up to now, it had been within the vanguard of pastiche literary zom-com mash-ups that briefly crazed in book stores a couple of years back. P&P&Z sees Elizabeth Bennet looking for love and independence just like a zombie plague erupts round her and American wildlife oddly starts turning up inside the Berkshire countryside. It absolutely was then your type of Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, as well as, Abraham Lincoln subsequently subsequently: Vampire Hunter, also will a cinema in your town, because of Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov.Shooting on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is pencilled looking for the beginning of 2012.

Previously On 'Arrested Development': Tracking The Movie's Progress

After years and years of hoping, wishing, prepping our cut-off jean shorts and blueing ourselves, it finally looks like an Arrested Development movie is going to happen, and theres an added bonus: creator Mitch Hurwitz and the cast confirmed over the weekend that there will also be a new nine or ten episode season before the movies release. Now that the agony is over, lets take a look back at the ups and downs of AD movie news over the years and believe us, thereve been a lot of them. » Back in early 2009, Michael Cera put a squash on the movie rumors, saying it was more hypothetical than people think and that there wasnt a script yet. » But a week later, Ron Howard said he wasnt worried about getting the then breakout star Cera back for an Arrested Development movie. » Howard reassured fans again at the Oscars that year that the movie was going ahead and that creator Mitch Hurwitzs script was coming along. » At the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, Jason Bateman took back saying that the ship has sailed and said the screenplay was roughly half-way done... the way it would stay for years. » While promoting Youth in Revolt back in December 2009, Cera told MTV he hoped to shoot the movie sometime in the next year. Oh, if only! » Then Tony Hale, aka Buster Bluth, confirmed at Sundance a few weeks later that the entire cast, including Liza Minnelli, was on board and just waiting for the script. » On the red carpet at the 2010 Oscars, Bateman said that Hurwitz and Will Arnetts work on the doomed Running Wilde would push filming back a few months, but the cast was still hopeful to shoot by the years end. » As predicted, Arnett confirmed that shooting was pushed back due to Running Wilde but was still, despite rumors, going to happen. » Cera pitched an idea to Hurwitz at San Diego Comic Con in July 2010 for what he thinks George Michaels been up to. Heres a hint: hes kind of creepy now. » David Cross said during an interview for Megamind that he knows the concept of the story and that its awesome. » After FOX cancelled Running Wilde, Ron Howard said the Arrested Development movie was now front and center in Hurwitzs focus. » But things looked pretty grim when David Cross said he was not that optimistic back in February of this year. » Confirming what we had previously heard from Cross almost a year earlier, Bateman said he knew the plot, and he takes Cross compliment a step further. Its incredible, he says. » Bridesmaids and occasional AD director Paul Feig said that news about the script is like a Bigfoot sighting. Youre telling us! » This past June while promoting Horrible Bosses, Batman gave more of the same and told MTV that everybody creatively wants to do it. Were you holding out on us, Bateman? There are still many questions to answer, but for now, it looks like Netflix and Showtime are the two biggest players in the battle for the next season of Arrested Development, which would set the table for the long-awaited movie. When Hurtwitz unveiled his plan at the NYer Festival, he said he hoped to take an unorthodox approach to the mini-series. He wants to focus on one character per episode, letting viewers know what each character has been up to since 2006. Check back with MTV News for all the latest Arrested Development news as more info on the reunion comes out.

Can 'Moneyball' Overcome Baseball's Oscar Slump?

Columbia TriStar This year's Oscar game has barely begun. You could say we're still in the top of the first. But now that Sony's Moneyball has arrived in theaters after its successful premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the play-by-play commentary has begun. Is Moneyball, in which Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, general manager of the Oakland Athletics, an awards player? Adapting Michael Lewis' best-selling nonfiction book, director Bennett Miller and screenwriters Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin steer a skillful course through a thicket of baseball lore to dramatize how Beane beat the odds and deep-pocketed teams like the NY Yankees by using statistical analysis to identify and bet on undervalued players. If that sounds dry, it isn't. Pitt lets go of his golden boy image -- Miller's camera zeroes in on every weary line on his face -- to become an underdog out to redefine the way the game is played. Attention will be paid. TORONTO REVIEW: Moneyball But what of prospects for the film itself? After catching a pre-opening screening, Awards Daily blogger Sasha Stone tweeted up a storm: "Will be a major Oscar player I think. First film I've seen that can win," she predicted, though conceding, "Long way to go still." Critic Leonard Maltin wasn't quite so sure, cautioning, "Moneyball is easy to admire, a bit more difficult to love." PHOTOS: 'Moneyball' Premiere in Oakland Appearing so early in the season, the movie faces hurdles. It will be judged not only by its critical reception (it has registered a rousing 94 percent approval rating on RottenTomatoes.com to date) but also its commercial success. Its opening weekend of $19.5 million was solid but not as robust as that of last year's Sorkin talkfest, The Social Network, which bowed with $22.4 million. Plus, as a fact-based story, it could be picked apart by sports fans because Jonah Hill's statistician is a heavily fictionalized character and several key A's players are ignored. EXCLUSIVE: New Study Shows Brad Pitt's 'Moneyball' Generating Major Buzz Online But the biggest obstacle Moneyball faces is the fact that Hollywood has just never shown much Oscar love for the game. It didn't start out that way: The Pride of the Yankees, starring Gary Cooper as NY slugger Lou Gehrig battling the disease that would be named after him, was a formidable contender. It scored 11 noms but lost its 1942 best picture bid to the war-themed Mrs. Miniver. Other biopics came up to bat: Jimmy Stewart played White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton in The Stratton Story; William Bendix and, later, John Goodman starred as Yankees legend Babe Ruth. But in Academy terms, they barely made it to first base. Q&A: 'Moneyball' Author Michael Lewis on Oscar Hopes, Working With Brad Pitt and His New 'Liar's Poker' Screenplay Meanwhile, boxing movies were bringing home the gold. Wallace Beery (The Champ), Robert De Niro (Raging Bull) and Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) won acting trophies for fight movies. Rocky and Baby even got the best picture prize. If boxing movies enjoy an advantage, it's because they're often tales of sweaty personal redemption. They connect with audiences because all that action in the ring is immediate and visceral in a way most baseball movies are not. Like the game itself, a lot of baseball movies are abstract and cerebral. The Natural played like a fable about the loss of American innocence. Field of Dreams was a fantasy about pursuing one's bliss. Onscreen, baseball becomes a metaphor -- something Moneyball explicitly acknowledges in its final reel. But if any movie can break the baseball slump, it is Moneyball because, as Lewis himself sees it, "It's not really a baseball picture." Brad Pitt Jonah Hill Aaron Sorkin Moneyball
