'Pan Am' sales circle globe

"Pan Am" is off to a good start in the international marketplace, traveling the flight path set by "Mad Men."The Sony Pictures TV drama, which bowed Sunday to solid numbers on ABC, has already sold to about 100 territories, according to Sony.Australia, Canada, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Portugal and the U.K. are among the countries that have signed up for the early 1960s period ensembler starring Christina Ricci. In Blighty, "Pan Am" has been bought by BBC2, where it will screen later this fall. The appeal of "Pan Am" has likely been enhanced by the surprising success of "Mad Men" in key international markets. U.S. period pieces have traditionally been a hard sell in international markets, but "Mad Men" has been a strong performer in the U.K. and other markets for Lionsgate TV.With "Pan Am" mining the same time frame, international outlets may be looking at the show as a companion piece, or a competitive offering between "Mad Men" seasons.
